Bye Bye Wisteria Lane

It truly was the end of an era for me when the last ever episode of Desperate Housewives aired on UK TV screens last Sunday. I have watched this consistently great show since it began in 2005 when I was 15 years old and I am quite upset to see it go!

Although seven years is a long running time for a show nowadays, considering how many are often cancelled,  the way in which Desperate Housewives was set up could have allowed the show to continue for years to come.

I love the light tone of the show, mixed with more sinister and mysterious plot lines that added some spice to  the wives' tales of suburban life. My first favourite character was Bree, simply because of her rigidly styled red hair in Season 1 and her hard efforts to appear perfect when she was flawed like everybody else. In the later years of the show, my favourite characters became a combination of Carlos and Gabriela. These actors have great chemistry together and provided me with laughs in every scene they argued in.

Vanessa Williams has been a great addition to the show in the last couple of seasons, maintaining the bitchy persona she played in Ugly Betty but in a way that made us fall fondly for this character from her first appearance. Lynette and Tom always managed to set a weight to the show of realistic domestic issues - both great serious actors that I will miss watching every week.

The last season was a great way to end the long run of this amazing show with one last trial (literally) for the wives to get over. The death of Mike was so tragic and hard hitting adding shock to the season and the grief from Susan was played so sincerely from Teri Hatcher. A sad way for her character to leave our screens but this is recovered with the birth of her granddaughter, a truly moving moment in the last episode.

Last but not least, we cannot forget the voiceover - and what a voiceover! Played by Brenda Strong, this is the character that has literally been in every episode from start to finish describing the storylines of each character at the beginning of each show and suggesting what's next to come at the end. The voice of this show is what I will ultimately remember as the net curtains of this surburbabn comedy-drama closes for the final time.
