Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story

I just finished watching the TV movie Crazy Sexy Cool telling the story of the R&B/HipHop girl group of the 90s - TLC. The film stars young actresses Keke Palmer as Chilli, Drew Sidora as T-Boz and Niatia 'Lil Mama' Kirkland as Left Eye.

This film has all the elements to keep you entertained throughout from recreations of TLC music videos, to reenactments of past interviews and award show appearances to some real quality serious and emotional acting. The movie allows the viewers to fully explore the beginnings of TLC right up until the last years of the group as a three piece. The viewer is exposed to the struggles of the band from professional (not making any money even after success) to personal (relationship problems and health issues).

I was not aware of the full story of TLC just the basic background. I would advise any fan of TLC to watch this movie as for me, I learned so much more about the band as individual people as well as a unit, which I was not aware of before. Each actress played their role fantastically, even if they did not necessarily look like the women they were playing, I felt the essence of each TLC member from them all. Lil Mama completely embodied Left Eye's wacky impulsive personality while Drew added the main narrative with a more grounded tone and Keke portrayed the naivety perfectly. You should definitely hear more from these actresses after this.

The styling of the band was excellently accurate conveying the feeling of TLC in the 90s from beginning up until 1999 when No Scrubs came out. The clothes are amazingly nostalgic in reflection of the group from extra baggy jeans to plaid men shirts and crop tops teamed with Docs. All together this has made for a great success for VH1 becoming the highest rated show ever for the channel. Deservedly so, as this has turned out to be a quality film reminding us never to forget TLC.
