VMAs 2011: All Today's Most Popular Artists Fighting to Steal the Show....

The VMAs this year was full of showstopping performances as is usually expected from music's most popular awards show as well as tributes and shocking surprises.

The first surprise of the night was that Lady Gaga did not attend the award show as scheduled - instead her alter ego Jo Calderone showed up and performed her current single 'You and I' with Queen guitarist Brian May which added a nice legendary vintage touch. However this is where Jo's appearance should have ended as later on Lady Gaga insisted on staying in the character of her rather annoying drippy pretentious alter ego while presenting Britney with her tribute award, stealing her moment unfairly as 'Jo' acted way too predatory around Britney when this should have been her moment to shine.

Britney looked great anyway, never trying to hard in terms of fashion choices, adorning a simple sexy black jumpsuit (see Fl@unt Fashion for VMAs looks of 2011!). Her tribute was very disappointing to me though as the media built it up claiming that actual singers like Lady Gaga and Beyonce would perform a tribute when in fact a group of dancers performed some of Britney's hits in double speed. They were copying Britney routines yet it was hard to make out as the music was so fast and so I didn't have time to enjoy it. The tribute was lacklustre and not enough to represent the pop legend that is Britney.

I was excited to see Jay Z and Kanye West perform 'Otis' which matched the video in terms of long streams of spouting fire, commanding presence and obvious strong chemistry between the dominant rappers. Although someone jumped on stage which Jay was clearly not happy with - what is it with people jumping on stage with the Jiggaman?

And of course - the performance that the stole the show - not necessarily because of her vocals which were  amazing as usual, but the surprise reveal Beyonce made at the end of her performance to 'Love On Top' as she unbuttoned her tuxedo and made public her growing baby belly which absolutely shocked me. I had no idea! I hadn't seen the pictures of Beyonce arriving to the show announcing her pregnancy and so I was completely surprised - and what a way to do it. She's usually so private about her personal but she was clearly so happy she wanted to tell the world.

It was a cute moment seeing Beyonce and Jay Z so genuinely happy about their life outside of music - although some may argue that it was a tacky way to make the announcement by doing it so publicly - it will no doubt go down as one of the most showstopping moments in history. Back to her performance, it was refreshing to see Beyonce bring a retro feel back to the VMAs and she looked radiant.

Other performing artists that should be mentioned is Adele for her stunning performance of 'Someone Like You' who looked glamorous and classy in the best way, while other UK singer Jessie J performed on the side stage all night killing cover renditions of TLC's 'No Scrubs' to Katy Perry's 'Firework' as well as her own music - a good look for the newcomer. Chris Brown performed for the first time in four years and his creative interpretations of dance showed just how talented the singer is in more ways than one.
