The latest season of American Idol premiered last week with Randy Jackson as the only original judge and three new judges to join him in the shape of country singer Keith Urban, rapper Nicki Minaj and legendary singer Mariah Carey.
Now everyone guessed there would be tension between the two female judges as each woman is such a diva in her own right that it was inevitable their egos would find difficulty fitting together. Then that video leaked of Nicki and Mariah really coming to blows on the panel, confirming everyone's predictions.
Whether it was a publicity stunt or not the argument shown in the video seemed pretty serious, however Idol has found a way to playful edit this diva crossfire showcasing the numerous petty jibes flying from one female star to the other. It's actually quite humorous the way Nicki blatantly disrespects Mariah with her fiery quips while Mariah acts overtly classy and sighs loudly in dismissal. TV Comedy Gold.
No doubt this will gain viewers attention and keep the ratings on a high for Idol this season. I did not know much about Keith Urban before the show but I like him as a judge as he brings a sense of balance and calmness in the midst of the Nicki/Mariah chaos and gives expert judging critique. In fact, all the judges have impressed me with their educated advice to contestants and the talent seems to be on a high level also - I just hope the show focuses more on this rather than the diva spats on the panel.
All in all a great premiere giving me just what I hoped for in tension between judges, amusing jabs, and amazing voices.
Here's a little throwback to remind Fl@unt readers just exactly how much of legend new judge Mariah is:
