I saw the movie Prisoners this past weekend and I can say that is one of my favourite films of the year due to the high quality of acting and the endless twist and turns in the story. I wasn't expecting the film to be as amazing as it was although I was completely pulled in by Hugh Jackman's character upon seeing the trailer.
Prisoners tells the story of two sets of parents' plight as both their young daughters go missing on Thanksgiving. The parents are played by Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Hugh Jackman and Maria Belllo. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective who promises to find the girls, however Jackman's character isn't impressed with his progress and so takes it upon himself to try and find his child which causes more trouble and tension...
All the actors involved in this are high class but Hugh Jackman steals the show. You can see the strain and desperation in his tired eyes as he urges Jake Gyllenhaal's character to hurry up with his investigation. He refuses to grieve for his daughter believing she is waiting for him to find her. It is very much focused on his struggle mainly in reaching his little girl and the audience feel for him too even in his darkest actions. Jake is also good as the quiet cop dedicated to doing his job with a few past troubles of his own that may help him search deeply for the truth.
Paul Dano is so convincing as the prime suspect, slurring his words and staring blankly. Probably the creepiest thing in the film - as well as other disturbing shockers that the director Denis Villeneuve presents to us. I highly recommend Prisoners, its an experience that will consume you right till the very end - a great treat for Autumn cinema.
